The night index is a flat spot that has been ground on the curve of the cross guard. If you hold the knife in your right hand with the cutting edge facing down, your thumb will feel the flat spot. Once you are familiar with the feel of the index, you will be able to tell, without looking, which way the cutting edge is pointing.
