At a meeting in Ft.Bragg,
North Carolina in June, details were finalized on a project that will
provide a first class knife to the men of the United States Army Special
Forces. The knife will be known to the Green Berets as “The
Yarborough”, named for the man known affectionately as the “father
of the Green Berets”, General William P. Yarborough. This no-nonsense,
hardworking tool was designed by renowned knife-maker and designer,
William W. Harsey of Creswell, OR with function and manufacturing
input from Chris Reeve. The knives will be made in Boise, ID
by Chris Reeve Knives, a company known world over for its extremely
high standards of design and manufacturing quality.
On the completion
of the Qualification Course (Q Course), each graduate from Special
Forces Training will be presented with a serial numbered “Yarborough”. The knife will be available for purchase by current and former members
of the Special Forces from the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum
Gift Shop at Ft. Bragg. Purchases of all serialized Yarboroughs
are subject to USASOC approval. Without the name Yarborough
and serial number, the otherwise identical knife will be available
for purchase by other military personnel and civilians.
The
Yarborough or Green Beret Knife has a full tang, 7 inch blade of CPM
S30V, a state of the art stainless steel produced by Crucible Steel
in Syracuse, NY. Heat treated to 55-57RC, the blade is coated
with non-reflective KG Kalgard GunKote®. The contoured handle slabs
are machined from OD green canvas micarta, while a Blackhawk Industries
ballistic nylon sheath completes this efficient, tough, uncompromising
knife.
“It is a privilege to be making what I believe to be the
finest military knife on the market today for the exceptional men
of our US Special Forces,” said Chris Reeve, President of Chris Reeve
Knives.
